Schlieren Instruments

A Schlieren Instruments is an apparatus used to visualize changes or inhomogeneities in the refractive index of air or other transparent media. In a schlieren setup, light bends due to changes in the refractive index as it passes through a medium with non-uniform density, resulting in a non-uniform distribution of light intensity on the image plane, which produces an image with alternating light and dark areas. This allows for the detection of defects such as bubbles, growth patterns, scratches, and inclusions within the transparent medium.
