Picosecond Lasers

  • Picosecond lasers work on the principle of stimulated emission. Electrons in atoms transit from lower to higher energy levels after absorbing energy. When these electrons fall back to lower energy levels, they release energy in the form of photons. In picosecond lasers, the pump source inputs energy to the gain medium, creating a population inversion of particles within the gain medium. Particles in the higher energy levels, when stimulated by an external optical signal, undergo stimulated emission, followed by the generation of light with the same frequency, phase, and polarization as the incident light. Such light is reflected and amplified multiple times within the resonant cavity, ultimately generating ultrashort laser pulses in the picosecond range.
